L'origine delle casette del tempo, o igrometri domestici, risale al XVIII secolo, ma conobbero il loro apice di popolarità in Germania e nelle regioni alpine nel XIX secolo. Nati originariamente come strumenti scientifici rudimentali basati sull'igroscopia (la capacità di materiali organici di reagire all'umidità atmosferica), furono presto trasformati in deliziosi oggetti d'artigianato. La Val Gardena, con la sua secolare tradizione nella scultura lignea, ha adottato e perfezionato questo oggetto, elevandolo da semplice strumento meteorologico a vera e propria opera d'arte decorativa. Le figure in costume tradizionale che adornano queste sculture sono un riferimento diretto alla cultura tirolese e bavarese, mantenendo viva un'eredità culturale alpina profondamente radicata.
