Description

Bring a unique piece of craftsmanship into the children's bedroom or classroom with the Dolfi Educational Abacus, a timeless classic for children's education.

Made entirely from fine maple wood, as per tradition for Val Gardena sculptural creations under 56 cm, this instrument combines robustness with an exceptionally smooth finish. The supporting structure features the natural grains of light wood, sanded and treated to ensure maximum safety to the touch.

The five rows of beads, painted with bright, opaque colors (red, orange, yellow, green, and blue), offer immediate visual stimulation. Each rod hosts ten spherical beads, one of which is positioned separately to facilitate the understanding of basic numbering and calculation concepts, following the chromatic progression for intuitive and fun learning.

It is the perfect tool to transform learning mathematics into a game, guaranteeing the durability and quality that only South Tyrolean craftsmanship can offer. It measures 22 cm.

Detail & Meaning

The abacus, in this context, does not have a sacred iconographic meaning, but embodies the universal symbol of knowledge and early education. Its structure, with ten beads per row, represents the decimal base on which modern mathematics is founded, making it a powerful tool for visualizing abstract concepts. The separation of a single bead on each row is a crucial detail for teaching the composition of the number ten (9+1) and introducing the concepts of grouping and carrying over, transforming play into a first, fundamental lesson in logic and numerical abstraction.

Story

The history of the abacus, or counting frame, dates back to antiquity, being one of the oldest and most widespread calculating tools in the world. The first known forms date back to cultures such as the Mesopotamian and Roman. Although it is now often associated with childhood education, for millennia the abacus was the main tool for merchants and scholars to perform complex operations, long before the advent of mechanical calculators. The model presented here, despite its simplicity, is inspired by the functional principles of oriental abacuses (such as the Chinese suanpan or the Japanese soroban), adapting them to the sensibility and artisan tradition of Europe and Val Gardena, which for centuries has excelled in woodworking for objects intended for home and education.
