Description

Immerse yourself in the magical and soothing atmosphere of the Alps with this splendid Timekeeping House, a handcrafted jewel that combines folklore, functionality, and the sculptural mastery of Val Gardena.

This masterpiece is a concentration of alpine charm: from the overhanging roof expertly decorated with stylized snow and fir trees, to the lively white walls adorned with floral motifs and hand-painted windows. The surrounding landscape, complete with a deer and a mushroom, creates an idyllic scene that captures the spirit of the mountains.

At the center of the composition, a functional thermometer indicates the temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit. On either side, two movable figurines in traditional attire dance on their bar, anticipating weather changes and bringing a touch of mystery and folklore. Observing their position is like connecting to ancient popular wisdom.

In line with the Dolfi tradition, this meticulous creation is made of precious maple wood, carefully selected for its stability and ability to support fine carvings and such rich details, even in a contained size like these 12 cm of pure handcrafted magic. The finish, predominantly matte and semi-gloss on the colored surfaces, enhances the quality of the hand painting.

Detail & Meaning
The Casetta Segnatempo (Weather House) has its roots in popular meteorological tradition, especially that of the Alps and the Black Forest, where weather observation was a vital aspect of daily life. The two figurines, often depicted in Tyrolean or Bavarian clothing, symbolize the harmony between man and the rhythms of nature. The mechanism on which they move is a rudimentary hygrometer: the female figure (in fair-weather clothes) emerges when the air is dry, while the male figure (in bad-weather clothes) moves forward when humidity increases. This simple, yet fascinating, iconography is a visual reminder of the deep connection between the mountain community and the secrets of the climate.
Story
The origin of the weather house, or "Wetterhäuschen", dates back to the 18th century in Germany. They were developed as a decorative and popular way to monitor environmental humidity and, consequently, attempt rudimentary weather forecasting. Their spread was rapid, particularly in alpine regions, where pastoral and agricultural life was intrinsically linked to weather conditions. The artisans of Val Gardena adopted this art form, elevating it thanks to their centuries of experience in wood carving. They transformed the houses from simple tools into true works of popular art, rich in landscape details that tell stories of the mountains and manual skill handed down from generation to generation.
