Description

This enchanting decorative object is not just a practical thermometer, but a true three-dimensional picture that captures the essence of alpine life and the craftsmanship of Val Gardena. The Alpine Time-Teller House is masterfully crafted using precious maple wood, known for its fine grain and ability to enhance the most minute details. The 12 cm size is perfect for bringing out the meticulousness of the sculptures.

The central structure, which simulates a traditional mountain chalet with a snowy roof and a welcoming chimney, discreetly houses the thermometer that precisely measures the temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit. On the base, which acts as a small alpine meadow, a lively miniature scene unfolds: two figures in traditional Tyrolean attire converse serenely. They are accompanied by a docile fawn, a symbol of innocence and unspoiled nature, and a bright green fir tree. All the details, from the red windows with white grilles to the small decorative elements like the stylized sun and scattered multicoloured spheres, are finely hand-painted and sculpted, making each piece unique. This time-teller, with its unmistakable alpine atmosphere, adds a touch of warmth and tradition to any environment.

Detail & Meaning
The scene depicted is an ode to "Gemütlichkeit", meaning the sense of warmth, coziness, and well-being typical of Alpine culture. The small house symbolizes the domestic hearth and security. The figures in traditional costume evoke cultural identity and pride in their mountain roots. The integration of natural elements such as the deer, often associated with the forest and freedom, and the fir tree, a symbol of eternal life and resilience, emphasizes the harmony between man and the pristine mountain environment. The thermometer itself, in addition to its practical function, represents awareness of time and seasons, which is fundamental in Alpine life.
Story
The wood craftsmanship in Val Gardena, from which the Dolfi tradition originates, dates back to the 17th century. Initially focused on sacred art, over time it evolved to include folk and decorative objects such as these "keepsakes" or Alpine souvenirs. These objects, while not having a sacred origin, are heirs to the same sculptural mastery handed down from generation to generation. The popularity of miniatures depicting scenes of mountain life and chalet architecture grew exponentially with the advent of Alpine tourism, transforming local craftsmanship into a global ambassador of Tyrolean and Dolomite culture.
