Description

The statue of Saint Gregory the Great is a masterpiece of wood carving that evokes solemnity and profound spirituality. The Holy Bishop is depicted in a dynamic and contemplative pose, a symbol of his fervent ecclesiastical activity. Admire the rich chromaticism: the sumptuous reddish-brown of the outer garment is magnificently balanced by the whiteness of the under tunic, enhanced by the embroidery and borders made with golden metallic-effect finishes.

The details are meticulously crafted: from the tall miter with cross decorations, to the golden crozier (characterized by an unusual four-bar cross), to the open book he holds in his left hand. The serene expression, framed by the thick dark beard, gives the figure an aura of authority and wisdom, typical of a Doctor of the Church.

Each piece is the result of the ancient artisan art of Val Gardena, shaped by expert hands that respect centuries of tradition. This sculpture is available in a wide range of sizes, designed for every devotional or collecting need. It is made of maple wood for sizes up to 56 cm, perfect for minute details and pictorial rendering, and of linden wood for larger sizes (from 56 cm upwards), ensuring solidity and grandeur.

Detail & Meaning
Saint Gregory the Great (Pope Gregory I) is one of the four great Doctors of the Western Church, and his iconography in this sculpture reflects his role and wisdom. The Mitre and the gilded Crosier identify him as a Bishop and Pontiff, symbols of authority and guidance. The open Book he holds is the fundamental attribute that refers to his vast theological writings, particularly the Pastoral Rule, which defined the role of the clergy. His solemn pose and contemplative expression convey his authority and the depth of his faith, making him a powerful symbol of doctrine and reform.
Story
Born in Rome to a noble family around 540 AD, Saint Gregory the Great (Pope from 590 to 604) is considered the founder of the medieval Papacy. His election occurred during a period of great instability, amidst invasions and plagues, during which he distinguished himself for his tireless charity and for defending Rome from the Lombards. His most enduring legacy is linked to liturgical reform, with the organization of the melodic repertoire that came to be known as "Gregorian Chant," and to the sending of missionaries to Britain. Canonized immediately after his death, his feast day is celebrated on September 3, and he is revered as the patron saint of musicians and students.
