Description

The statue of Saint Edward the Confessor is a masterpiece of wood carving that celebrates regal majesty and profound spiritual devotion. The figure is depicted in an upright and contemplative position, clad in a rich burgundy and dark brown robe, embellished with golden finishes that recall the preciousness of the crown and staff.

The hand painting enhances every detail: from the wide folds of the cloak to the serene expression of the bearded face. The golden elements, treated with a finish reminiscent of aged gold leaf, contrast beautifully with the opaque and semi-gloss tones of the fabrics, giving the sculpture an aura of authentic antiquity.

Val Gardena craftsmanship is expressed in the meticulous care of every detail, from the globus cruciger resting on the book to the subtle stylized motif of the stole. Our sculpture is synonymous with Dolfi quality and tradition. Made of maple wood for sizes up to 56cm, renowned for its carving fineness, and of precious linden wood for larger dimensions, ensuring stability and detail even in monumental works.

Detail & Meaning
Saint Edward the Confessor is depicted with attributes that define his dual nature as King and Saint. The crown and golden staff symbolize his earthly authority and royal lineage. The central object is the globus cruciger, a key symbol representing Christ's dominion over the world, placed on a book, a reference to his wisdom, divine law, or, in some interpretations, the code of laws he promulgated. His serene expression and gaze directed towards the sky emphasize his deep piety and devotion to faith, which is why he is venerated as a "Confessor" (one who testifies to faith without suffering martyrdom).
Story
Edward the Confessor (c. 1003 – 1066) was one of the last Anglo-Saxon Kings of England. His reign is remembered for peace, justice and, above all, for his deep religious devotion, in stark contrast to the political turmoil that preceded it. He is historically known for founding and enriching the historic Westminster Abbey, where he was buried and where subsequent generations venerated him as a Saint. Canonized in 1161, his figure represents the ideal of the pious sovereign. His story is indissolubly linked to England's transition before the Norman Conquest, making him a crucial figure in medieval religious and political history.
