Description

The sculpture of Saint Bridget of Sweden captures a moment of deep contemplation and charity. The humble and serene expression of her face, framed by the white veil, invites silent devotion. The artist has skillfully imbued softness into the folds of her garments, creating a realistic effect of movement and depth, enhanced by the rich oil coloring and meticulous shading.

Every detail is crafted with extreme precision: from the rosary hanging with the small golden crucifix to the raised hand gesture, which can be interpreted as a sign of blessing or welcome. The central symbol, the lit candle resting on the book of Rules, radiates light and spiritual knowledge.

This artwork is an excellent example of the sacred craftsmanship of Val Gardena, entirely handcrafted and hand-painted. Depending on the selected size, we use the finest woods: it is made of maple wood for sizes up to 56cm and linden wood for other sizes. This careful selection ensures maximum sculptural definition and durability in every format, from 25 up to 200 cm.

Detail & Meaning
1) Iconographic and symbolic elements: candle and book.
2) Religious meaning: The candle symbolizes the light of faith and divine presence, often associated with prayer and devotion. The book represents wisdom, the Word of God, and the writings of Saint Bridget, including her messages and revelations.
Story
Saint Bridget of Sweden (or Birgitta), daughter of Lagman of Uppland, was born into a pious family. After the death of her mother, she had a dream vision of the Man of Sorrows. Married at 13 to Ulf Gudmarsson, she had eight children. She became lady-in-waiting to Queen Blanche of Namur. After a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and the death of her husband, she had a divine call to found a new religious order, the Ordo Santissimi Salvatoris, mainly for women. She went to Rome at the behest of Christ, hoping to bring the Pope back from Avignon. Despite the apparent "failures" (she did not see her order fully realised, nor the Pope return permanently to Rome), her visions and her commitment to the reform of the Church made her an influential figure. She died in 1373 and was canonized in 1391. She is the patron saint of Sweden and her order spread throughout Europe. Her feast day is July 23.
