Description

The statue of Saint Anselm the Bishop is a masterpiece of faith and artisan skill, created according to the centuries-old sculptural tradition of Val Gardena. The artist has captured the figure of the Saint in an upright and contemplative pose, conveying profound serenity, perfectly in line with his role as a theologian and thinker.

The chromatic details are executed with exceptional care: the sumptuous outer robe, in a warm brick red, is embellished with wide borders and decorative patterns in patinated gold, which elegantly contrast with the cream-colored undergarments. The pontifical mitre on his head and the golden crozier, symbols of his spiritual authority, complete the austere elegance. The natural skin tone and the texture of the beard and hair add realism and depth to his serene, downward-cast face.

Each piece is entirely hand-painted with the "oil colored" technique, which gives the surface a matte and satin finish, capable of enhancing every minute detail of the carving. Depending on the size chosen, this sculpture is made of maple wood for sizes up to 56 cm and the prized linden wood for larger sizes. This meticulous material selection ensures maximum detail definition and durability over time, making Saint Anselm a significant presence in any sacred or domestic environment.

Detail & Meaning
1) Iconographic and symbolic elements: Episcopal vestments, book, ship.
2) Religious meaning: The episcopal vestments indicate his role as archbishop and Doctor of the Church. The book symbolizes his profound theological and philosophical erudition, which made him a "father of scholasticism". The ship may represent his spiritual journey, the Church as a "ship of salvation" or his peregrinations in exile to defend ecclesiastical freedom.
Story
Saint Anselm of Canterbury, born in Aosta in 1033/34, was a monk and then abbot of the monastery of Bec, distinguishing himself for his spiritual guidance. Having become Archbishop of Canterbury in 1093, he strenuously defended the freedom of the Church against the English kings, refusing lay investiture and suffering two exiles. He was an influential philosopher and theologian, considered the father of scholasticism. He died on April 21, 1109 and in 1720 he was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church. His feast day is April 21. The sculpture depicts him in episcopal vestments, with a book and a ship.
