Founder of a monastery and abbess in Maubeuge

Died 30 January around 698

Aldegundis was the daughter of Waldebertus I, regent for Chlothar II in the Sambre and Meuse region, and his wife Bertilla, daughter of the prince of Turinge. She escaped from her parents under the influence of her sister Waldetrudis when they urged her to marry, and received the veil as a nun from Amandus in the monastery of Hautmont. At her investiture, a dove is said to have placed the veil on her head. In 661, she founded the double monastery of Malbodium - today's Maubeuge - where she became the first abbess She placed an emphasis on caring for the sick and the poor, and also endowed a hospital for this purpose. A candle that fell over and went out while she was engaged in spiritual conversation with her sister lit itself when she picked it up again. During the course of her life, she was granted numerous visions. Aldegundis died of cancer, and her niece Adeltrudis succeeded her as abbess.

Aldegundis was buried in Cousolre. Her relics were brought to Maubeuge on the initiative of Adeltrudis, and they now lie in the parish church there; part of them were lost during the French Revolution, and another part in 1944, when the church was destroyed during the war. Aldegundis' veneration spread rapidly in Belgium, the north of France, to the Rhine and as far as Bavaria; in Emmerich on the Lower Rhine a church has been dedicated to her since before 1060, in which a small relic is also kept; also the church in Leverkusen-Rheindorf, first mentioned in a document in 1170, is under her patrocinium, as is the church in Koslar - today a district of Jülich; the village of St. Aldegund on the Moselle is also under her patronage. Aldegund on the Moselle is named after her; a church was built for her in the Middle Ages on the Staffelberg near Bad Staffelstein in Upper Franconia.

Patroness of Koslar; against eye, breast, and children's diseases, cancer, headaches, ulcers, inflammations, fever, and sudden death; for children who have difficulty learning to walk.
