Description

This sculpture captures a moment of vibrant liveliness: a lamb standing upright, lifting its head and opening its mouth, as if caught in the act of bleating. The expression, given by its open eyes and dynamic pose, imparts a sense of immediacy and realism to the nativity scene.

The craftsmanship of Val Gardena shines in the meticulous detailing of the fleece. The wool is rendered through a sculptural texture of rounded, overlapping tufts, which give extraordinary three-dimensionality and the illusion of soft, thick wool. The contrast between the whiteness of its features and the accurate painting of its hooves and muzzle details enhances its purity.

According to our tradition, the Dolfi Lamb is entirely made from precious maple wood, the ideal material for sculptures of these dimensions (up to 56 cm). This choice ensures a perfect rendition of the most minute details, such as the realism of the reddish-brown hooves and the internal coloring of the mouth. It is available in various finishes, ranging from vibrant and naturalistic colors to natural maple wood, and even a three-shade brown finish that enhances its grain and warmth.

Detail & Meaning
The meaning of the Lamb in the nativity scene is deeply rooted in Christian tradition. A symbol of innocence and purity, the lamb is also the prefiguration of the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), who redeems humanity through his sacrifice. Its presence in the stable, looking upwards, is not just a pastoral element, but a silent reminder of Jesus' messianic mission as the Shepherd. The vocalisation, though a simple bleat, can be interpreted as the first recognition and praise of Creation towards the newborn Son, giving the Nativity a sound and living dimension.
Story
The inclusion of animals in the Nativity scene dates back to the first representations of the Nativity, often focused on the ox and the donkey. The lamb, however, is an essential element that links the scene of the Birth to that of the shepherds caring for the flock, central figures in the announcement of the Gospel. Its depiction is closely connected to the artisanal tradition of Val Gardena, where wood carving flourished from the 17th century, evolving from votive figures to complex Nativity dioramas. The hands of the Dolfi sculptors, passing down centuries-old techniques, continue to shape figures that combine the realism of alpine nature with the solemnity of the sacred narrative, transforming a simple piece of wood into an eternal symbol of faith and devotion.
