Nelle tradizioni popolari, specialmente quelle alpine e tirolesi, le raffigurazioni di animali selvatici sono spesso considerate portafortuna o incarnano la ricchezza faunistica locale. La tradizione della scultura lignea in Val Gardena risale al XVII secolo. Storicamente, gli artigiani locali, durante i lunghi mesi invernali, si dedicavano alla creazione di oggetti sacri per la chiesa, ma anche figure profane come animali, giocattoli e piccole statuette votive, che venivano poi vendute nei mercati europei. La rappresentazione di animali locali e comuni come il Germano Reale (presente nei fiumi e laghi alpini) fa parte di questa tradizione “naturalistica”. Questi piccoli oggetti, inizialmente smerciati dai "tragers" (portatori) che viaggiavano in tutta Europa, oggi mantengono viva la memoria di un'arte che coniuga la funzionalità (come nel caso del portachiavi) con l'incomparabile maestria scultorea tirolese.
