These blanks still need to be fully carved. Depending on the quality of the milling and the details of the work, the carver can therefore produce relatively many copies of a work in a short period of time. However, a figure, for example, is considered """"hand carved"""" if it has been completely reworked with carving knives.
Pattern carving is associated with a greater degree of difficulty. It involves working a negative in depth, as opposed to the relief carving of classical relief. The additional challenge is that the left and right sides of the pattern must be reversed in the negative to reproduce the original pattern in the next one. Often sculptors carve the image in a mirror.
