Description

Relive the magic of the most beloved fairy tale with this splendid Barometer House, a masterpiece of carving that combines the enchantment of Hansel and Gretel with the functionality of a weather instrument. This wooden sculpture, created by the skilled hands of our Val Gardena artisans, faithfully reproduces a charming alpine dwelling, enriched with details that tell the famous story.

Observe the precision with which the log building was crafted, with its red brick roof and delicate windows adorned with carved hearts. In the center, the scene comes to life: young Hansel and Gretel stand beside an adult figure, while on the right, the hunched and menacing figure of the witch, leaning on her staff, awaits. Each character, from expressions to costumes, is hand-painted with vibrant colors and a semi-matte finish that enhances the natural texture of the wood.

Attention to detail is visible on the upper facade, with the pretzel-shaped carving and the fairy tale title. In the center of the arch, in addition to the thermometer that measures Celsius and Fahrenheit, a barometric mechanism indicates changes in the weather thanks to two characters in traditional attire who move. This 18 cm tall piece is entirely carved and finished using precious maple wood, the choice of excellence for our sculptures under 56 cm, ensuring strength and exceptional definition in every small detail.

Detail & Meaning
The sculptural representation of Hansel and Gretel is not merely a fairytale re-enactment, but a work that captures the eternal conflict between innocence and evil. The little house, with its sweet details like carved hearts and the pretzel (a symbol of food and temptation), acts as a visual trap. The composition is dynamic: the children and the protective figure on the left represent hope and escape, while the witch figure on the right, with her inviting and sinister gesture, embodies danger. The presence of the barometer and thermometer adds a layer of metaphor: just as weather is changeable and unpredictable, so is the fate of the protagonists, linking the artistic object to the natural cycle and vigilance.
Story
The story of "Hansel and Gretel" is one of the most famous collected by brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in 1812, rooted in European oral traditions. Although its meaning is often interpreted as a warning against famine and abandonment, it has become a universal archetype of childish courage and victory over darkness. The use of this narrative in Val Gardena craftsmanship fits into the region's long sculptural tradition, which since the 17th century has embraced both sacred art and profane subjects related to folklore and alpine life. "Barometer houses" or "weather chapels" are a traditional element of the alpine regions, where wood craftsmanship has joined the practical need to measure weather conditions, creating household objects that are true conversation pieces and works of art.
