Description

Let a piece of authentic Alpine tradition enter your home with this magnificent Weather House, a masterpiece of carving and painting from Val Gardena. Every detail of this miniature mountain house is crafted with artisanal passion, transforming a simple forecasting tool into a splendid decorative work of art.

The structure, carved with meticulous precision, features a sloping brick-colored roof with simulated tiles and a characteristic wooden balcony decorated with red and green garlands. The windows, enlivened by small vibrant flower boxes, add a touch of color to the cream-white facade. At the base, a bucolic scene unfolds: a figure seated at rest, a faithful dog, and small stylized pine trees stand on hand-carved and painted ground with rich green and moss shades.

The heart of the house hosts a central thermometer, flanked by the two main figures in traditional costume: the woman with flowers (traditionally associated with good weather) and the man with an umbrella (a sign of impending rain), symbolizing the internal hygrometric mechanism.

This 22 cm version is made entirely from precious Maple Wood, chosen for its fine grain and its excellent ability to receive the colors and meticulous details of the carving. The matte finish and hand-painting enhance the warmth and rusticity, making each piece unique.

Detail & Meaning
The little Weather House embodies the deep connection between mountain dwellers and weather conditions. The figures in traditional costumes are not just decorative: they are an integral part of the hygrometric mechanism. Their alternating movement (even if static in this representation) symbolizes anticipation and adaptation to climate changes. The woman coming out heralds the arrival of the sun and the possibility of working outdoors, while the man with an umbrella or stick represents the need for protection from the rain. The entire scene depicts the ideal of alpine life, simple and in harmony with the surrounding nature.
Story
The origin of the "Wetterhäuschen" (Weather House) dates back to the 19th century in the Black Forest region of Germany and the Alpine areas. Despite its apparent simplicity, the object is an ingenious instrument that exploits the hygroscopic properties of certain materials (traditionally a gut string or, in some modern variants, a synthetic filament) which shorten or lengthen depending on the humidity of the air. This movement causes the internal axis to rotate, alternately moving the two figures. Popularized as souvenirs and functional objects, these houses have become an enduring symbol of mountain craftsmanship, combining measurement precision with warm popular aesthetics.
