The cuckoo call can be heard every hour on the hour, but the cuckoo cannot be seen.

Sebbene l'orologio a cucù sia tradizionalmente associato alla Foresta Nera in Germania, la sua evoluzione è intrinsecamente legata all'abilità dell'intaglio del legno, un'arte che trova la sua massima espressione anche in Val Gardena. I primi orologi con meccanismo a cucù risalgono al XVII secolo, ma fu nel XIX secolo che la loro produzione esplose, trasformando l'orologio da semplice strumento a vero e proprio oggetto d'arte e decorazione domestica. Il design "Baita" o "Chalet" è diventato popolare in quanto rappresentazione romantica dell'architettura rurale alpina, permettendo agli artigiani di Val Gardena, maestri nell'intaglio di scene di vita e figure sacre, di applicare le loro secolari competenze a questo classico oggetto d'arredo.
