La storia dell'orologio a cucù (Kuckucksuhr) è strettamente legata alla regione della Foresta Nera in Germania, dove fu perfezionato nel XVIII secolo. Questo stile, noto come orologio da caccia (Jagduhr), divenne enormemente popolare grazie alla sua ricca decorazione che utilizzava motivi faunistici locali. Sebbene il meccanismo orologiero tradizionale provenga storicamente dalla Germania (come talvolta indicato sul quadrante), l’abilità scultorea e l'intaglio di altissima qualità che caratterizzano queste opere d'arte sono un tratto distintivo dei maestri artigiani della Val Gardena.
