Who was Saint Basil?
Saint Basil (330–379) was one of the great Fathers of the Church. He defended the Nicene faith, wrote the Rule that still guides Eastern monasticism, and founded the “Basiliad”, a true city of charity with a hospital and shelter for the poor, sick, and travelers.
Who venerates him and when is his feast day?
He is venerated by Basilian monks, Byzantine-rite communities, and many faithful in Italy, especially in Calabria, Sicily, and Puglia. The Catholic Church celebrates him on January 2, while the Orthodox Church celebrates him on January 1; in Greece, he is the “Santa Claus” who brings gifts at New Year.
