Description

Discover the imposing sculpture of Saint Stanislaus of Krakow, a carving masterpiece that embodies the artisanal mastery of Val Gardena. This statue has been shaped with care and devotion, capturing the figure of the Holy Bishop with moving solemnity. Its serene and contemplative expression, accentuated by a thick beard, inspires peace and profound reflection.

The Saint is dressed in clerical robes of a rich red-brown tone, splendidly enriched with wide borders and golden details that simulate the preciousness of gold leaf. The long golden crozier, held in his right hand, and the elaborate miter, completed by a shield emblem on his forehead, emphasize his spiritual authority and episcopal dignity. The detail of the open book, held in his left hand, and the closed book on which his foot rests, add symbolic depth to the pose.

Each piece is a testament to Dolfi's excellence. The sculpture is made of maple wood for sizes up to 56 cm and precious linden wood for larger sizes, ensuring impeccable stability and detail rendering in all available variants (from 15 cm to 200 cm). The polychrome finish is hand-painted with masterful skill, enhancing the volumes and the drama of the drapery, transforming the wood into a vibrant and durable art form, perfect for personal devotion or sacred furnishings.

Detail & Meaning
The iconography of Saint Stanislaus, often depicted with a mitre and golden crozier, emphasizes his role as a spiritual leader and defender of the faith as Bishop of Krakow. The open book he holds symbolizes the Holy Scriptures and preaching, pillars of his mission. The dark book crushed under his foot may represent the overcoming of earthly doctrines or the victory of spiritual justice against tyranny. His serene and contemplative expression, looking downwards, reflects humility and profound devotion, even in his position of ecclesiastical power.
Story
Saint Stanislaus (1030-1079), known as Stanisław Szczepanowski, is one of the most important patrons of Poland and was Bishop of Krakow. His story is marked by the courage he showed in opposing King Bolesław II the Bold, whom he openly criticized for his immoral and tyrannical conduct. His refusal to submit to temporal power led to his martyrdom: he was murdered, according to tradition, by the king's men (or by the king himself) while celebrating Mass in the cathedral. This act transformed him into a martyr for spiritual freedom and justice. He was canonized in 1253, strengthening his cult as a symbol of the defense of morality against the abuse of power.
