Description

This wooden sculpture depicts Saint Roch the Pilgrim standing and gazing upward. His crimson cloak contrasts with the cream-coloured tunic; gold-coloured details and scallop shells, symbols of pilgrimage, enrich the figure. At the saint’s feet, a winged angel child with a lyre completes the scene.

Created in keeping with the artisan tradition of Val Gardena, the statue is available in heights from 12 to 150 cm. Versions up to 56 cm are made from maple wood; larger sizes are made from linden wood. Choose the height that suits your home or a dedicated prayer space.

Saint Roch’s feast day is 16 August. He is venerated as a protector of plague sufferers, pilgrims, and those who care for the sick. This devotion recalls his service to the sick during the plague and his own pilgrimage.

Detail & Meaning
Saint Roch’s iconography identifies him as a pilgrim through his walking staff and gourd flask, which evoke his long journey, and especially the scallop shell, emblem of the Camino de Santiago. Although he is best known for his association with the plague, this sculpture presents him primarily as a pilgrim of faith. The winged angel child with the lyre may symbolize divine harmony or an angel accompanying him, emphasizing the purity and protection surrounding the saint. The book he holds represents his knowledge of Scripture and his devout life.
Story
Saint Roch of Montpellier (c. 1340–1379) was a French nobleman who gave up his possessions and devoted himself to caring for plague sufferers in Italy during the 14th century. According to legend, he contracted the disease himself and withdrew to a forest so he would not infect others, where a dog miraculously brought him bread each day. (Although this episode is not shown in this particular sculpture, it is central to his story.) He is widely known as the patron saint of plague sufferers, pilgrims, and healers. His cult spread rapidly across Europe, making him one of the most venerated and depicted figures in sacred art, and a symbol of hope, charity, and healing.
