Description
Nicholas of Flüe, lived between 1417 and 1487, was born in Switzerland to peasant parents. After fighting for his canton, he chose to withdraw from public life to become a hermit. He settled in a small cell in Ranft, where he lived for nineteen years, subsisting solely on the Holy Eucharist. Known as "Brother Klaus," he offered wise counsel to those who sought his help. Canonized in 1947, he is the patron saint of Switzerland and the Pontifical Swiss Guard. The feast of Saint Nicholas of Flüe falls on March 21st.
