Description

Let yourselves be touched by the profound spirituality and artisanal mastery contained in this sculpture of Saint Martin the Bishop. The figure is sculpted in a solemn and contemplative pose, with his gaze directed towards the act of reading or the goose at his feet, conveying a sense of humility and devotion.

Attention to detail is evident in the richness of the sacred vestments. The outer robes in ruby red-brown are enhanced by wide borders and meticulous details in a polished gold finish, applied with techniques reminiscent of ancient gold leaf. The miter and crozier, entirely gilded and richly carved with an intricate spiral volute, emphasize the Saint's episcopal authority.

Each sculpture is a masterpiece of the Val Gardena sculptural tradition, available in colored or natural finishes. The material is carefully chosen to enhance every dimension: sizes up to 56cm are carved from maple wood, famous for its fine grain and sculptural precision, while larger sizes (from 60cm upwards) are made from sturdy linden wood, ensuring stability and visual impact even in monumental formats.

Detail & Meaning
1) Iconographic and symbolic elements: Saint Martin with book and goose.

Story
Saint Martin of Tours, a 4th-century bishop, is one of the most venerated figures in Christianity. Born in Pannonia (modern-day Hungary) and raised in Italy, he became a Roman soldier. His most famous act is the division of his cloak with a poor beggar, an episode that symbolizes his charity and compassion. Leaving his military career, he devoted himself to monastic life and later became bishop of Tours, in France. He is the patron saint of soldiers, beggars, tailors and winemakers. His feast day, November 11, is linked to rural traditions and the maturation of new wine. The goose is often associated with him because of a legend that tells how he tried to hide among the geese to escape episcopal appointment.
