Description

Admire the majestic and contemplative figure of Saint Hedwig, a sculpture that combines profound spirituality with the artisanal excellence of Val Gardena. The sweet expression and delicate features of the face are enhanced by the rich polychromy, meticulously applied by hand.

The brilliant colors – the slate blue of the mantle, the shiny gold of the borders, and the soft pink of the robe – provide a visual impact of great value. Every drapery is rendered with touching realism, accentuated by details that appear to be embellished with authentic golden paint, giving a slightly satin and precious look. The meticulous rendering of the church model and the open book testify to the mastery of the Dolfi sculptors.

This sacred work of art is available in various finishes, from the traditional Colored (C) which enhances every shade, to the essential Natural wood (N) or Three Shades of Brown (3G) finishes. In accordance with our sculptural tradition, the statue is made of precious woods: we use maple wood for sizes up to 56 cm and switch to robust linden wood for larger sizes. A masterpiece of wood carving that carries centuries of history and devotion.

Detail & Meaning
The iconography of Saint Hedwig is rich in symbols related to her life of faith and charity. The golden crown symbolizes her royal origin, even though she chose a life of humility and devotion. The miniature building (often identified as a church or a monastery, such as the one in Trzebnica founded by her) emphasizes her role as a protector and benefactor of religious institutions and the poor. The open book she holds in her left hand represents her constant meditation on the Holy Scriptures and her wisdom. Her upright posture and thoughtful gaze communicate deep spirituality and careful compassion for others.
Story
Saint Hedwig of Silesia (or Hedwig of Andechs) lived between the 12th and 13th centuries (c. 1174 – 1243). Born in Bavaria and married to Henry I, Duke of Silesia and Greater Poland, she became known for her deep piety and charitable works, especially after becoming a widow. She is remembered for wearing religious attire (though without taking monastic vows) and for founding numerous charitable institutions, including the Cistercian Abbey of Trzebnica. She is the patron saint of Silesia, Poland, and the state of Berlin. Her feast day is celebrated on October 16, a day on which she is also invoked as a protectress against debts and for the resolution of financial problems.
