Description

The statue of Saint Adrian of Canterbury is a sublime expression of Val Gardena’s sacred art, a collector’s piece that combines deep spirituality and artisanal mastery. The figure is depicted in all his episcopal dignity, robed in richly decorated vestments.

The polychrome finish immediately captures attention: the deep colors – from burgundy red to dark blue/green – are enhanced by sumptuous golden details. The application of precious gold leaf accents stands out on the crozier, the miter, and the lavish borders of the cope, lending an aura of sacredness and magnificence to the work. The shading and attention to detail, such as the thick wavy beard and the solemn expression, attest to the dedication of our sculptors.

This sculpture is made according to the centuries-old Dolfi tradition. To ensure maximum fidelity and quality in every size, we use selected materials: the work is carved from maple wood for sizes up to 56 cm, an ideal material for intricate details. For larger sizes, starting from 60 cm, we use sturdy linden wood, ensuring stability and grandeur to the figure.

Detail & Meaning
The iconographic representation of Saint Adrian in episcopal vestments, although he was historically an abbot, is a way to honor his immense spiritual and intellectual authority. The golden crozier symbolizes his function as a guide and shepherd of souls, while the open book he holds in his right hand is the universal symbol of knowledge, wisdom, and erudition. Saint Adrian was indeed a renowned teacher and scholar. His upright posture and contemplative expression, with eyes slightly downcast, reflect profound humility and a life dedicated to meditation and the teaching of the Holy Scriptures.
Story
Saint Adrian of Canterbury, also known as Hadrian of Naples, was an influential abbot and scholar of the 7th century. Originally from North Africa (possibly Berber) and educated in Naples, he was chosen by Pope Vitalian to accompany Theodore of Tarsus to England. After humbly refusing the position of Archbishop of Canterbury twice, he finally accepted the role of abbot of St. Augustine's monastery in 670. Under his guidance, the school of Canterbury became one of the most renowned centers of learning in Europe, spreading knowledge of Greek, Latin, astronomy, and poetry. His feast day is celebrated on January 9, and his legacy is that of a great educator and guardian of the faith.
