St Catherine of Siena, born in 1347, is one of the most important figures of the Catholic Church and Italian history. From a young age, she devoted herself to prayer and the service of the poor, entering the order of the Dominican Sisters. She was a political and religious councillor of great influence, corresponding with popes and kings to promote peace and reform the Church. Canonised in 1461 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970, she is one of the patron saints of Italy and Europe.
