In arte sacra, la capanna non è semplicemente un riparo, ma il luogo scelto da Dio per manifestarsi nella semplicità e nella povertà del mondo. La rappresentazione come "rovina" o struttura fatiscente, comune nell'iconografia, simboleggia spesso la fine del Vecchio Patto o la caduta del mondo pagano (richiamata talvolta dalla rovina di un tempio) su cui sorge la nuova fede (Cristo).
