The wooden sculpture is carved in maple and hand-painted with oil colors by the artists of Val Gardena. The Santa Claus of English tradition is sculpted with a WASSAIL pan, a hot drink made from beer or cider with spices and roasted apples, which in English custom some girls, known as the Wassail girls, visited homes singing Christmas carols and imparting blessings.
