His liturgical feast is celebrated on August 13.
Story
Michael McGivney was born on August 12, 1852, in Waterbury, Connecticut, into a Catholic family of Irish immigrants. Growing up in poverty, he understood from an early age the burden that financial hardship placed on working-class families.
Ordained a priest in 1877, he devoted himself tirelessly to caring for the most vulnerable members of his parish in New Haven. In 1882, he founded the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic mutual aid organization that would grow to include millions of members worldwide, providing practical support to workers and families facing financial difficulties.
He died young, at just 38 years old, in 1890 from tuberculosis. His cause for beatification was opened in 1997, and on October 31, 2020, Pope Francis declared him Blessed Michael McGivney.
The centuries-old woodcarving tradition of Val Gardena, which dates back to the 17th century, has always devoted particular attention to great witnesses of the Christian faith, creating monumental sacred sculptures for churches and places of worship around the world.
