Admire the majesty and profound spirituality of our sculpture of Saint Matthew the Evangelist, a masterpiece of carving that embodies the artistic tradition of Val Gardena.

The artist has immortalized the Saint in an upright and contemplative pose: his serene face, framed by a flowing, finely sculpted beard, radiates wisdom. The gesture of his left hand, pointing to the book in his right hand, emphasizes the message of the Divine Word that he was called to write and preach.

The richness of details is enhanced by the finish. The expertly draped outer mantle shines thanks to the application of precious gold leaf, in stark contrast to the opaque and velvety shades of dark green and burgundy red of the undergarments. Saint Matthew, son of Alpheus and originally from Galilee, was a tax collector in Capernaum, a profession that was frowned upon. Called by Christ with a simple "Follow me," he became one of His disciples. His Gospel, the first of the New Testament, was written in Aramaic between 41 and 50 AD to convince his people that Jesus was the Messiah. After 42 AD he is thought to have fled to Parthia, Persia, or Ethiopia to escape persecution; the circumstances of his death are unknown. Often depicted with a human face, he is the patron saint of bankers. His feast day is celebrated on September 21.
