Description

Admire the sublime depiction of Saint Hildegard of Bingen, a masterpiece of wooden sculpture that captures the majesty and profound spirituality of the Doctor of the Church. The figure stands in a dynamic and contemplative pose, enveloped in sumptuous drapery rich in movement, typical of the best sacred art of Val Gardena.

The monastic habit shines in shades of intense red and deep blue, creating a vibrant contrast that enhances the precious gold details. Particular attention has been paid to the skillful use of polychromy, which gives realism and depth to the folds of the fabric and to the serene and inspired face of the Saint. Details, such as the crown and the volute of the crozier, are finely crafted and enriched with golden applications.

This sculpture is made from precious Linden wood, selected for its uniform fibers that allow for meticulous craftsmanship, ideal for sizes ranging from 60 cm to 200 cm. Each piece is hand-carved or meticulously finished, respecting the ancient Gardena tradition. Available in finish C (Polychrome) which enhances the vibrancy of the colors, or in finish 3G (Three shades of brown) for a more classic and austere effect.

Story
Saint Hildegard of Bingen, also known as the Sibyl of the Rhine, was a 12th-century German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, and mystic, proclaimed a Doctor of the Church. Born in 1098, from a young age she had divine visions which, although initially concealed, were later recognized by the Church.
Her immense knowledge in theology, music, and natural sciences, despite the absence of a formal education, made her famous throughout Europe. Her works, including "Scivias", document her visions and teachings. She was also a prolific composer of songs.
After her death in 1179, her veneration grew. Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 conferred upon her equivalent canonization and the title of Doctor of the Church, recognizing her as an "authentic teacher of theology and profound scholar." Her feast day is celebrated on September 17.
