November 16 - Optional Memory
Eisleben, Germany, ca. 1256 - Monastery of Helfta, Germany, 1302
Born in 1256 in Eisleben, Germany, at the age of 5 she was entrusted to the nuns of Helfta and spent the rest of her life with them. Educated in the excellent school of the abbey, she soon revealed an uncommon intelligence. At the age of 26 she had a vision in which she found herself in front of a hedge of thorns. The Lord lifted her up and laid her on her side. """"From then on I began to follow the fragrance of your balms and learned in a short time that the yoke of your love is mild and light."""" Of his progress in the life of the spirit, we are informed by his work, 'Revelations,' which consists of five books. Only the second, the 'Legatus', a hymn to the mercy of God, is written in his own hand. The first, a biography of her, and the others were composed after her death by a sister, from her notes and stories. At the base of her mystical experiences there are liturgical celebrations, while the language shows a strong biblical imprint. Finally, her doctrine is Christocentric. The mercy of the Savior transports her into his divinity to the point that, like Mary, she feels herself to be the bride and mother of Jesus. Living constantly in the presence of God, she always sees Jesus, the God made man, the Savior with a torn heart and lives in willingness to suffer what is still missing from the passion of Christ One of the greatest Christian mystics, she died in 1301 or 1302.
