While tending sheep, Francisco is said to have had an angel appear to him three times in 1916, together with his sister Jacinta and his cousin Lucia dos Santos, near Fátima (Portugal). From May 13 to October 13, 1917, the three children had apparitions of Mary on the 13th of each month (with the exception of August, because the children had been kidnapped) in the Cova da Iria (German: Grube der Iria) near Fátima. According to him, he saw the apparition but never heard her speak.
In December 1918 he fell ill with the Spanish flu, from which he died on April 4, 1919. On March 13, 1952, his remains were transferred to the Basilica of the Rosary at Fatima.
Beatification and canonization process
On the occasion of Pope John Paul II's pilgrimage to Fatima, Jacinta and Francisco were beatified on May 13, 2000. During the process of canonization, Pope Francis recognized a miracle attributed to the intercession of Francisco and his sister Jacinta on March 23, 2017. This fulfilled the final requirement for canonization of the siblings.[1] The canonization took place on May 13, 2017, during a visit by the pope to Fatima for the 100th anniversary of the Marian apparitions.
His liturgical day of commemoration is February 20.
