The sculpture of Saint Florian captures heroism in a moment of quiet determination. The Val Gardena carving masterfully shapes the figure of the saint, depicted in an upright and dynamic pose on a meticulous crenellated tower engulfed in flames. Attention to detail is evident in the dynamism of the white flag and the small bucket, symbols of his mission.

The pictorial details are exceptional: the rich drapery of the rust-red cloak contrasts with the golden armor and the vivid yellows and oranges of the fire. Note the serene and meditative expression of the face, a symbol of calm courage in the face of danger, finished with a natural and delicate complexion.

Saint Florian, a Roman martyr of the 4th century, was a high-ranking officer in Noricum (present-day Austria) who surrendered for his Christian faith under Diocletian. After atrocious tortures, he was thrown into the Enns river with a stone around his neck. His recovered body rests in the abbey dedicated to him near Linz. His relics were also donated to Poland, making him the patron saint of this country, Linz, Upper Austria, and, above all, firefighters. His veneration is widespread in Central Europe, invoked against the dangers of fire and water. His feast day is May 4th.
