Description

This majestic sculpture captures the profound spirituality of Saint Celestine V, presenting him with the dignity of pontifical vestments and the simplicity of a hermit. The work is a sublime example of sacral art from Val Gardena, where the carver's skill merges with the richness of the finishing.

Admire the sumptuousness of the burnt Siena earth-colored outer cloak, expertly draped in soft folds that give dynamism to the figure. The borders and the tiara are embellished with meticulous gilded details, masterfully applied to reflect light and accentuate the prestige of the figure. The composed expression and flowing beard, carved with incredible realism, invite contemplation.

Our sculpture of Saint Celestine V is made with the utmost craftsmanship. To ensure perfect definition of details, it is carved in maple wood for sizes up to 56 cm. For more imposing sizes, from 56 cm and above, we use linden wood, which is more suitable for large-format statues. Each piece is entirely hand-painted, transforming the wood into an icon of faith and devotion.

Detail & Meaning
<p>The iconography of Saint Celestine V is rich in references to his life, divided between the hermitage and the papal throne. The figure is dressed in papal vestments (the Tiara, the Crozier) which refer to his very brief pontificate. The <strong>elaborate tiara</strong>, though a symbol of earthly power, is balanced by the humble expression and contemplative face, which underscore his preference for the ascetic life of Pietro da Morrone. The <strong>crozier</strong>, with its triple cross, is a distinguishing mark of his ecclesiastical role, while the <strong>open book</strong> he delicately holds at chest height symbolizes his profound erudition or, more likely, the Rule of the Celestines, the order he founded. The books at the base reinforce the connection with spiritual knowledge and his activity as a monastic legislator.</p>
Story
<p>The figure of Saint Celestine V, born Pietro Angelerio del Morrone, is one of the most singular and touching in the history of the Church. Born in 1215, he lived most of his life as a hermit in Abruzzo, founding the Congregation of the Celestines. He was elected pope in 1294, at almost 80 years old, during a period of severe crisis for the conclave. His political inexperience and humility led him to make the famous <strong>"Great Refusal"</strong>, resigning after only five months of pontificate to return to his life of prayer. This act, also cited by Dante in the Divine Comedy, is seen today as a sublime example of renouncing power in the name of faith. He was canonized in 1313.</p>
