San Berwardo, bishop of Hildesheim (993-1022), was an eminent figure of his time, combining profound spirituality with extraordinary artistic and intellectual abilities. Educated at the imperial court, he became tutor to Emperor Otto III, influencing his formation. His veneration is mainly linked to his work as a builder and patron of the arts. The realization of masterpieces of Ottonian art, such as the bronze doors and the column of Christ in the Hildesheim cathedral, are due to him, testimonies of his aesthetic vision and his faith. The book and the chalice, iconographic attributes, respectively symbolize his erudition and his episcopal role, guardian of the Word and celebrant of the Sacraments. His memory is celebrated on November 20th.
