Description

Immerse yourself in spirituality and artisanal mastery with the statue of Saint Bernard of Tiron. This sculpture captures the figure of the Saint in a moment of deep contemplation, with his head slightly bowed and his gaze contemplative. The upright yet serene pose is enhanced by the impeccable rendering of the monastic habit, draped in warm brown tones that suggest the texture of the fabric.

Every detail is meticulously crafted: from the four-pointed black beret to the open sandals revealing his feet, up to the cincture at his waist with the Tau cross. The chromatic balance is completed by the vibrant red-orange book held in his left hand and the pastoral staff, whose light wooden shaft is topped with a precious volute finished in gold leaf.

This sacred work of art is a testament to the ancient tradition of Val Gardena. Crafted with care and dedication, the statue is carved from maple wood for sizes up to 56cm and from linden wood for larger sizes, ensuring quality and detail in every available variant.

Detail & Meaning
Saint Bernard of Tiron is depicted with attributes typical of his monastic and pastoral life. The brown habit symbolizes humility and poverty, while the Tau cross (Saint Anthony the Abbot's cross or Saint Francis's cross) emphasizes his deep spirituality and adherence to a life of rigor. The book, often associated with the Holy Scriptures or the Monastic Rule, and the golden pastoral staff, indicate his role as founder and guide of religious communities and his commitment to evangelism and the care of souls. His serene expression and downward gaze reflect his dedication to prayer and and meditation.
Story
Saint Bernard of Tiron, also known as Bernard of Abbeville, was a French hermit and founder of the Tironensian Order (or Congregation of Tiron), a branch of the Benedictines. Born around 1046, he dedicated much of his life to monastic reform, emphasizing manual labor and craftsmanship as an integral part of religious life, especially carving and woodworking. After living as a hermit, he founded the Abbey of Tiron in 1109, which became a spiritual and working hub of great importance. His figure is therefore closely linked to the dignity of manual labor, a value that deeply resonates with the artisan tradition of Val Gardena.
