Description

A sculpture of extraordinary elegance portraying Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Doctor of the Church and founder of the Cistercian Order, in all his spiritual authority. Hand-finished by the artisans of Val Gardena, this statue combines devotion and craftsmanship in a work made to last.

The saint is depicted standing, wrapped in a grey-black monastic habit with a broad golden mantle and a burgundy-red drape that falls naturally. In his right hand he holds a golden abbot’s crozier, a symbol of his authority as abbot, while in his left he holds a written scroll, recalling his extraordinary theological work. A crucifix hangs on his chest and a skull rests at his feet, a memento mori of the Cistercian ascetic tradition. His bearded face, contemplative gaze and index finger pointing downward convey deep meditation and doctrinal authority.

Available from 15 to 200 cm, the sculpture is made from maple wood up to 56 cm and linden wood for the larger sizes, with hand-painted and hand-gilded finishes in the Gardena tradition.

Detail & Meaning
The golden crozier represents his authority as abbot and spiritual guide. The written scroll refers to his celebrated theological works, including De Consideratione and his sermons on the Song of Songs. The skull at his feet is the classic memento mori of ascetic spirituality: an invitation to meditate on death as the gateway to eternal life, a central theme in Cistercian mysticism. The crucifix on his chest expresses his Christ-centred devotion, the heart of his spiritual teaching.
Story
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153) was one of the most influential monks, theologians and Cistercian reformers of the Middle Ages. He founded the abbey of Clairvaux in 1115 and led the reform of the Benedictine Order, establishing the spiritual rigour of the Cistercians. A tireless preacher, he influenced popes and kings, promoted the Second Crusade and fought the heresies of his time. Proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1830, he is celebrated on 20 August. The tradition of sacred carving in Val Gardena, rooted in the 17th century, has always devoted particular care to the figures of great saints and Doctors of the Church.
