Description

The St. Benedict Dolfi Cross is a sublime encounter between sacred art and the purity of nature. This Latin cross is made entirely of precious olive wood, a material revered for its biblical roots and for its marked veins ranging from golden brown to dark olive green, making each piece visually distinctive and deeply symbolic.

The finish was designed to maintain a natural and semi-matte appearance, enhancing the wood grain without covering its intrinsic beauty. The focal point of the cross is the St. Benedict Medal, perfectly set in the center. The metallic element, with its antique silver appearance, creates an elegant chromatic contrast with the warmth of the wood. The attention to detail and the precision of the carving are the result of the centuries-old craftsmanship of Val Gardena, a guarantee of quality and durability over time. Available in various sizes, from 16 cm up to 40 cm, it is an ideal object for domestic devotion.

Detail & Meaning
The spiritual heart of this cross is the Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti Medal, a powerful sacramental recognized by the Church as a symbol of protection and exorcistic prayer. The medal depicts Saint Benedict holding the Cross and his Rule. The lateral symbols – the raven flying away with poisoned bread and the broken cup from which a snake emerges – represent the Saint's victory against poisoning attempts. The inscriptions, particularly the Latin initials on the back (such as V.R.S.N.S.M.V., which means "Vade Retro Satana"), are prayers for liberation from evil, culminating in the word "PAX" (Peace) placed above the Saint's head.
Story
Saint Benedict of Norcia (480-547 AD) is the founder of Western monasticism and the patron saint of Europe. The Medal of Saint Benedict is one of the oldest and most widespread sacramentals in the Church. The first crosses incorporating symbols attributable to the Saint date back to the medieval era. The medal as we know it today, with its precise exorcistic inscriptions, was formalized in 1742 thanks to the approval of Pope Benedict XIV. The use of olive wood for the cross symbolically connects to biblical history and the Mount of Olives, adding a layer of sacredness and durability to the artifact.
