Description

The sculpture of Saint Barbara with Tower is a masterpiece of devotion and artisanal skill, a work that carries within it the centuries-old tradition of the sculptors of Val Gardena. This depiction captures the saint in a standing pose, enveloped in flowing garments that create extraordinary visual dynamism.

The cloak, painted in a deep dark blue, contrasts elegantly with the cream-colored inner tunic and the pristine veil, while the details of the crown and the edges of the drapery are enriched with a gold leaf-like finish, which imparts a touch of sacred regality and luminosity. The main attribute, the crenellated cylindrical tower, is held firmly to her chest, a symbol of her unwavering faith.

The expression on her face is one of serene contemplation, emphasized by delicate features and downcast eyes, conveying a profound sense of peace and devotion.

Each piece is hand-carved and finished in accordance with sculptural tradition. This statue is available in various finishes — Painted (C), Natural (N), or Three Shades of Brown (3G) — allowing for perfect integration into any sacred or domestic environment.

To ensure the highest quality and definition in every size, the statue is made from precious maple wood for sizes up to 56 cm. Larger sizes (from 60 cm upwards), however, are carved from the more robust and suitable linden wood, a material chosen for its stability and its excellent sculptural rendering on a large scale.

Detail & Meaning
Saint Barbara is venerated as a protector against lightning, fire, and sudden death. Her iconographic attributes are essential for understanding her meaning: the <strong>Tower</strong> she holds to her chest symbolizes the place of her imprisonment, where she was segregated by her father Dioscorus for her faith. The tower often features three windows, in reference to the Holy Trinity, a central dogma of her conversion. The rectangular object in her right hand, resembling a book or a tablet, alludes to the Holy Scriptures or divine wisdom obtained through study. The reddish-brown element under her right foot alludes to the defeat of her persecutor, often represented as a crouching figure or a dragon, symbolizing the victory of faith over evil. Her serene expression and downward gaze reflect her unwavering faith and her acceptance of martyrdom.
Story
The story of Saint Barbara (3rd century AD) is steeped in legend, although her cult is one of the oldest and most widespread in Christianity. Born in Nicomedia or Heliopolis, tradition holds that she was imprisoned in a tower by her pagan father, Dioscorus, to protect her from the outside world. During this segregation, Barbara discovered and accepted the Christian faith. Upon her refusal to recant, she was tortured and beheaded by her own father, who, as divine punishment, was immediately struck by lightning. Due to her association with the tower and lightning, Saint Barbara is the patron saint of artillerymen, firefighters, miners, engineers, and all those who risk sudden death, being counted among the <strong>Fourteen Holy Helpers</strong>. Her devotion has deep roots in South Tyrol, where the sculptural tradition of Val Gardena has portrayed her for centuries as a symbol of strength, protection, and spiritual resilience.
