Born in Lisbon in 1195 as Fernando, he entered the Franciscan order taking the name of Anthony. His profound knowledge of the Scriptures and his eloquence made him an exceptional orator, capable of converting heretics and touching hearts. Among his most famous miracles are the sermon to the fish of Rimini, the proof of the Eucharist with the hungry mule, the reattachment of the severed foot of a repentant young man, and the revelation of the paternity of a child.
Anthony was also known for his ability to unmask avarice, as demonstrated by the miracle of the usurer's heart found among his possessions. His unwavering faith allowed him to drink poison without suffering any harm and to save his father from an unjust accusation of murder.
Even after his death in Padua in 1231, the miracles attributed to Saint Anthony continued, with healings of the sick and crippled. His figure is a symbol of faith, humility and charity, and his veneration is widespread throughout the world, making him a powerful intercessor for those seeking help and comfort.
