Description
St. Anselm of Canterbury, born in Aosta in 1033/34 to Lombard nobility, lived from 1060 as a monk in the monastery of Bec, which he led as abbot from 1078. His efforts to lead the monks to a higher spiritual life were better known than his monastery. Elevated to Archbishop of Canterbury in 1093, Anselm proved to be a staunch defender of the Church's freedom against the English royalty. In the spirit of the Gregorian reform, he rejected lay investiture and the oaths of allegiance of bishops. As a result, Anselm had to go into exile twice. As a philosophical and theological writer, Anselm had a great influence on the medieval doctrine of God and is rightly called the father of scholasticism. Anselm died on 21 April 1109 and was buried in Canterbury Cathedral. In 1720 he was elevated to the rank of Doctor of the Church.

The sculpture shows him in episcopal vestments with book and ship.
St Anselm is celebrated on 21 April.

Detail & Meaning
1) Iconographic and symbolic elements: Episcopal vestments, book, ship.
2) Religious meaning: The episcopal vestments indicate his role as archbishop and Doctor of the Church. The book symbolizes his profound theological and philosophical erudition, which made him a "father of scholasticism". The ship may represent his spiritual journey, the Church as a "ship of salvation" or his peregrinations in exile to defend ecclesiastical freedom.
