Description
Sacred Heart of Jesus Divine Mercy Woodcarving Made Large Catholic Statues; Sacred Heart of Jesus

June 19 (mobile celebration)

The Lord's concern for the lost sheep is recalled in the liturgy of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The good shepherd has his whole heart turned to his sheep, not to himself. He provides for their needs, heals their wounds, protects them from wild animals. He knows each sheep by name and, when he takes them out to pasture, he calls them one by one. He is especially concerned about the sheep that have gone astray, sparing no pains to have the joy of finding them again. A lost sheep is absolutely defenseless; it can fall into a ditch or get caught in the brambles. Right then, however, in the midst of danger, it discovers how precious its shepherd is: after being found, he brings it back to the fold on his shoulders with joy. If a wolf approaches, the good shepherd does not flee, but will even risk his life for his sheep. At these junctures the heart of the good shepherd is revealed.

Roman Martyrology: Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, who, meek and humble of heart, exalted on the Cross, became the source of life and love, from which all peoples will draw.
Detail & Meaning
The Sacred Heart of Jesus, carved in noble wood, is a powerful symbol of Catholic devotion. The iconographic elements include the flaming heart, often pierced and crowned with thorns, which represents the divine love of Christ. The flame symbolizes ardent charity, the thorns the sacrifice and the lance the Passion. This Dolfi artifact, while not a nativity scene, embodies the historical and theological richness of devotion to the Sacred Heart, celebrated with solemnity and prayer.
Story
The Sacred Heart of Jesus, venerated since the Middle Ages, had its official liturgical feast established by Pope Pius IX in 1856, celebrated on the third Friday after Pentecost. This devotion, centered on the pierced heart of Christ, was reinforced by popes such as Leo XIII, who consecrated the world to the Sacred Heart, and Pius XII. Every first Friday of the month is dedicated to Holy Communion and Eucharistic Adoration. Although deeply Catholic, the devotion has a strong Christocentric emphasis. In some regions, such as South Tyrol, the following Sunday is also celebrated with processions and votive fires.
