L'origine del Rosario come lo conosciamo oggi risale al Medioevo, consolidandosi come pratica popolare a partire dal XII secolo. La sua diffusione è strettamente legata all'ordine domenicano e alla tradizione che lo vuole rivelato a San Domenico dalla Vergine Maria. Il suo nome deriva dal latino "rosarium", che significa "corona di rose", simboleggiando le preghiere come doni floreali offerti a Maria. L'uso del legno di Ulivo per la sua realizzazione aggiunge un ulteriore strato di significato storico, in quanto l'Ulivo è un albero venerato nelle culture mediterranee e bibliche, associato alla pace (dopo il Diluvio Universale) e all'Orto del Getsemani, legando così l'oggetto a luoghi e momenti fondamentali della storia della Salvezza.
