L'orologio a cucù (Kuckucksuhr) nasce nelle foreste del sud della Germania, in particolare nella regione della Foresta Nera, nel XVII e XVIII secolo. Originariamente semplici meccanismi in legno, divennero rapidamente icone del folklore tedesco, caratterizzate dalla casetta in legno e dalla tradizionale uscita dell'uccellino. Nel tempo, l'artigianato della Val Gardena, rinomato per la sua maestria nella scultura lignea, ha abbracciato e reinterpretato questa tradizione, specializzandosi nella creazione delle ricche scene decorative e delle figure che adornano questi orologi, elevandoli da semplice oggetto pratico a vera e propria opera d'arte popolare alpina.
