Description
This laser-cut wooden ornament with the image of St. Barbara is very popular because you can keep it in your purse, wallet or hang it in your home or car.

St. Barbara, died circa 200; feast day December 4, a legendary virgin martyr of the early Church. Adored as one of the 14 Holy Helpers, is invoked in thunderstorms and is the patron saint of artillerymen and miners. Since Barbara's authenticity is highly questionable and her legend is probably specious, it was removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969.

The legend, which dates back only to the seventh century, says that she was the beautiful daughter of a pagan, Dioscorus, who kept her guarded in a tower to protect her from evil. However, when she professed Christianity and refused marriage, he was enraged and took her to the provincial prefect, who commanded her to be tortured and beheaded. Dioscoros himself carried out the execution and, on his return home, he was struck by lightning and reduced to ashes.

The collection of souvenirs and wooden decorations enriches our collection of religious articles from Val Gardena.
