This masterpiece of wood carving captures the essence of the Nativity within a frame of evocative alpine beauty. The scene is a visual dialogue between the purity of the sacred and the rugged authenticity of nature.
The Holy Family (Joseph, Mary, and the Infant Jesus) is carved in a minimalist style, with rounded, polished lines that enhance their essential spirituality. The central figures, measuring 18 cm, are made from precious maple wood and shine with a smooth, blonde finish that highlights their natural grain, without the use of paint.
The distinctive element of this Nativity is its woodland setting. Numerous fir trees and conifers frame the sacred group, made from wood that has retained its natural, rough bark. This skillful material contrast – between the smoothness of the spiritual center and the rough texture of the forest – gives the work a tactile realism and a deep connection to the mountainous landscape of Val Gardena.
Integrated into the arch of the stable, a five-pointed star, also made of light wood, watches over the scene, a symbol of the divine light that guides in the heart of the night. Made entirely by hand, this sculpture is a testament to the artisan skill that Dolfi has carried on for generations.
