Inizialmente semplici strumenti di misurazione del tempo, gli orologi a cucù si sono rapidamente evoluti in opere d'arte popolare, con casse sempre più elaborate che rappresentavano scene di caccia, vita rustica e architetture locali, inclusi gli stili delle baite alpine. L'integrazione del meccanismo di richiamo, in cui un piccolo uccello emerge per battere le ore, ha reso questi orologi un simbolo iconico di precisione meccanica e di decorazione tradizionale.
