The Matteo Nativity scene expresses the sculptural mastery of Val Gardena in a rich and meaningful depiction of the Nativity. The set includes 12 figures, among them the Holy Family, the Three Wise Men, a shepherd boy with bagpipes, and typical stable animals such as an ox, a donkey, and three lambs. Each figure is hand-carved and painted, with vibrant finishes that highlight the expressiveness of the faces and the quality of the maple wood. This composition unites the homage of the shepherds and the Magi in a harmonious scene, ideal for collectors and enthusiasts of Christmas craftsmanship.
Each figure is carved with expressions of tender devotion: from baby Jesus, serene and lying in the manger, to Mary, kneeling with her hands clasped in prayer, to Saint Joseph, protective and attentive with his lantern simulating a warm light. The entire scene is brought to life by exquisite details: the draped folds of the garments, the texture of the beards, and the serenity of the animals, with the ox and donkey arranged in a picture of mystical peace.
The "oil painted" finish enhances the sculpture with warm and natural tones – browns, ochres, olive green, and bluish-green. Special attention is given to the burnished gold leaf accents on the robes of the Wise Men and a shepherd, which add a touch of regality and opaque luminosity. The painting, entirely hand-applied with a satin effect, gives each statue a unique and precious character.
For all available sizes (from 6 cm to 18 cm), the entire composition is masterfully crafted from Maple wood, the preferred wood of Val Gardena's master artisans for small and medium-sized sculptures, known for its compactness and ability to retain the finest details of manual carving.
