This Black Madonna of Loreto statue with the Child Jesus draws on one of the best-known images in Marian devotion at Loreto. Mary and the Child are both crowned, shown with a long mantle and the inscription “LORETO” on the base.
Their dark faces contrast with the ivory, cream and black tones of the mantle, decorated with gold-tone details. The statue is hand-finished and hand-painted; matte surfaces and glossy accents highlight the ornamentation.
The Madonna of Loreto
Devotion to Our Lady of Loreto is connected with the Holy House, preserved in the Sanctuary of Loreto in the Marche region. According to tradition, the house of the Virgin Mary was brought from Nazareth to Loreto. For centuries, the sanctuary has been a pilgrimage destination and place of prayer. The feast of Our Lady of Loreto is celebrated on December 10.
At home, this image of the Virgin and Child offers a reminder of faith, prayer and family bonds.
