Description

Let yourself be enveloped by the tranquility of this magnificent handcrafted sculpture portraying a Lying Ox in a moment of serene contemplation. Every curve and every shade of color has been shaped by the expert hands of our master sculptors from Val Gardena, heirs to a centuries-old tradition.

The animal is depicted in a resting pose, with rounded and smooth forms that enhance the softness of the subject. The finish, matte or semi-matte, highlights the warm hazelnut brown tones, intensified by shading and realistic details such as the small dark horns and the calm expression in its eyes.

According to Dolfi's production logic, for the available sizes (from 6 cm to 28 cm), this statue is exclusively carved from precious Maple Wood. This wood, known for its compactness and fine grain, allows for impeccable detail definition. You can choose between the vibrant colored finish, the essential elegance of natural wood, or the richness of the three shades of brown, perfect for enriching your Nativity scene or your collection of sacred art.

Detail & Meaning
The ox lying down in the context of the Nativity is one of the oldest and most significant figures in the Nativity scene. Iconographically, it symbolizes patient strength, humility, and sacrifice. Its presence, alongside the donkey, represents the fulfillment of biblical prophecies, particularly Isaiah 1:3: "The ox knows its owner." The reclining pose and peaceful gaze of our sculpture convey a sense of profound acceptance, recalling its role as a silent witness to the Divine Birth.
Story
The tradition of including the ox (or a bovine) in the Nativity scene dates back to the first apocryphal accounts of the Nativity and was consolidated by medieval representations. Saint Francis of Assisi, in 1223 in Greccio, included live animals to make the scene more realistic. In the context of Val Gardena craftsmanship, the sculpture of Nativity animals has been a cornerstone since the 17th century. The ox, meticulously carved, is not just a decorative element, but a historical link to the first depictions of the Bethlehem cave, perpetuating a sculptural mastery that has spanned centuries.
