He became a global icon of faith thanks to his spiritual gifts, the spiritual guidance of thousands of faithful, and the founding of the "Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza" (Home for the Relief of Suffering). He died in 1968 and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002, establishing himself as one of the most loved and venerated Saints in the modern world.
